Description

Bergamo Porta Sud is a redevelopment and enhancement project concerning a large urban area within the Municipality of Bergamo, covering more than one million square meters, straddling the railway axis and the city’s railway station.

The project’s unifying element is the overcoming of the railway barrier—currently a dividing feature within the city—and the organic reconnection of the area south of the railway line with the Piacentinian city center.

The project is structured around two main components. On the one hand, the creation of an intermodal interchange hub integrating the railway station with urban and regional transport systems, public mobility, and related services, improving and strengthening the road network through faster and more efficient connections among the various transport systems. On the other hand, a comprehensive urban regeneration initiative featuring a new urban district with residential, commercial, and public spaces, green areas, pedestrian and cycling paths, aimed at enhancing the area and creating high-quality urban environments.

With the advent of the third millennium, cities around the world have become the focus of particular attention and study, to the extent that this era has been defined as “the century of cities.” Within this global context, which recognizes a new and dominant role for highly urbanized areas, the city of Bergamo has embraced the challenge of change and transformation from a smart city perspective.

The primary objective is therefore to improve citizens’ quality of life by balancing and meeting their needs alongside those of businesses and institutions in the fields of technology, mobility, the environment, and energy efficiency.

Bergamo

Bergamo is the capital of the province of the same name in Lombardy and is located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Milan. With a population of around 120,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth-largest municipality in the region.

The city is characterized by its historic walled center, known as Città Alta, a defensive system recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bergamo is well connected to several Italian cities thanks to the A4 motorway, which runs along the Milan–Verona–Venice corridor and links the city to Caravaggio International Airport. It is the second most visited city in Lombardy, after Milan.
